Needless to say, a good old local-style breakfast that consists of toasts and kopi is something we Malaysians always strive for. No matter which day of the week we are in. 1. Restoran Kin Hua

This quaint coffee shop that dates its establishment back to 1919, is one of the local’s favourite breakfast spots in Johor to get a cup of good old Nanyang-style Kopi. Of course, it’s not just the coffee section that is raved by many coffee addicts. Here, they’ve also got a wide selection of breakfast menu from soft-boiled eggs, yam cakes, fried noodles and nyonya kueh too! Oh and go early to get a table before it’s all packed!

2. Han Kee Cake & Cafe

Of course, we know that Kaya Toast is one of those toasts that can’t be simply replaced. But we just can’t miss out on Han Kee Cake & Cafe. Established its ground in Batu Pahat for more than 10 years now, Han Kee Cake & Cafe is a place to savour an array of toasts and traditional style kopi. One of the most notable menu here is their Otak Otak toast. With a well balanced of savoury and sweetness, it makes you go in for more.

3. Sunshine Coffee (新东升咖啡店)

Located in Ulu Tiram, Sunshine Coffee is not an unfamiliar name to the locals. Favoured amongst all generations, this place uses Kluang coffee powder for its aromatic yet strong Hainanese coffee. So if you’re searching for a smooth and deep cup of kopi, this is the right place to go for it. Apart from its coffee,  Sunshine Coffee also hits the creative side with their Sambal Toast. We recommend a half-boiled egg to go with it!

4. Hock Kee Restaurant

A fairly new addition to the cafes that serve traditional local delights, Hock Kee Restaurant is somewhere you would stop by for its Nanyang fusion dishes. Here, you can choose whether you want your Kaya Toast to be crispy all the way or just on the exterior. Both are equally delicious with a huge slice of butter! Otherwise, you can also opt for their popular Hainanese Chicken Chop too.

5. Qin Garden Kopitiam

Although more popular for its Nasi Padang , this coffee shop is also on the top of the list for scrumptious soft-boiled eggs and kaya toasts. Additionally, you can also go for their wholemeal garlic bread for a more filling meal. Both taste great when coupled with their rich Hainanese coffee.

7. Restoran Hua Mui

With a long queue in the morning even before it opens, this place has an extensive menu to get you started. But here’s one thing the locals naturally order and that’s their Hainanese Chicken Chop. Said to serve the most original Chicken Chop in JB, it’s no doubt why it’s so good.

8. The Blackfast

The Blackfast is truly a place that instantly brings you back in time, especially with those tins of traditional biscuits laid across the shelves. Buttery on the inside and crispy on the outside, it’s best savoured while it’s hot.

Established for almost 60 years in Johor, Fang Yuan Kopitiam is known for its dedicated effort to roast their Hainanese coffee in house and homemade Kaya spread. It’s also the reason why they’re famous for their Kaya Toasts and White Coffee beverages. With a little pull back on its Kaya Toast’s size, their aromatic Kaya is what attracts many.

But what really separates them from other coffee shops in Johor is that the atmosphere here is filled with liveliness from a well balanced of customers across all races. The menu itself is something to look forward too. Here, we really recommend their Sambal Wholemeal Toast to tip into their runny soft-boiled eggs!
