Hey All

I hope you are all doing very well!!! Welcome to the third annual 50 STATE Tournament!!! This is a Tournament Game with all the 50 STATES competing against each other, and I hope to see many people participate in this!!! It is like a March Madness Bracket with 50 States facing each other, and you all have to vote Round by Round, which state you like better.

Some of you might remember the previous 50 STATE Tournaments that I ran over the years. Here is a link to all of previous tournaments to check out:

2020: https://www.city-data.com/forum/city...ournament.html

2022: https://www.city-data.com/forum/city...nament-ii.html

Procedures: Let me explain the procedures in more detail. So there are many rounds. Out of 50 states, two will face each other, and you will vote in each fixture regarding which state would be your favorite out of the two. It could be the state you would rather live in, rather vacation in, the state that you just love the most, whichever state means more to you in any way, your choice. Pick the state you would overall like better.

After the first round is done, all the states that won will advance to the next round and be drawn to face each other. Whichever State has MORE Votes Wins of course. This procedure will be repeated until the final round when there is only two states left, and one state wins the tournament. We are also adding a new addition to this tournament: Double Elimination!!! This means that once a state is eliminated in the Winners Bracket; it will go down to the Losers Bracket and compete with the other Losers. A state has to be eliminated TWICE to be officially eliminated, with the once exception in the Grand FINALE which is Winner of Winners Bracket vs Winner of Losers Bracket and the Winner of that WINS the Tournament!!! If any fixture ends in a draw by deadline, I will extend the deadline just for that specific fixture for another 1-2 hours. If it is still a draw, I will just wait for one more voter to change it. If a third hour has passed, and still a draw, I will restart the fixture at 0-0, and everyone has only 24 hours to revote again, and the winner will progress.

I know this might be a little confusing, so please ask me any questions if you are confused or need more of an explanation!

If you have not been to certain states, you can either skip some fixtures, guess which state you might prefer based on what you have heard, or take advice from other people on these forums or other friends. Anybody can enter the tournament and vote at anytime. Suppose you see this when Round 2 already starts, you can vote even if you missed Round 1. Jumping in is not only allowed but is encouraged at any time during the tournament. The more voters we have the better. Approximately, every round will last about one week; and we are looking at about 11 Rounds all together, so I expect this Tournament will end sometime in Early October!!!

One other thing to remember is because the USA has 50 States, there will be a number of towns that will start in Round 2 in order to even out the bracket. After Round 2, it will be all the states still left in the tournament though. Seeding has been done according to performances in the last two tournaments. Therefore the best performing states in the previous two tournaments, will automatically bypass Round 1 and start in Round 2. I basically ranked every single state by coefficient based on performances in the previous tournaments, and the bracket generator generated a bracket for me!

By the way the best way to vote is probably to quote my post of fixtures, and either bold or underline the town you vote for, but you can do it any way you feel comfortable with. I will be keeping track of everyone who has been voting. In the future rounds, I will likely DM you in the middle of the week if you have not voted in a certain round yet, but have in a previous round in order to send a reminder and make sure you do not forget to keep voting. Remember you can enter at anytime, and please do vote. We want as many voters as possible. Depending on the circumstances, I could extend the deadline if I feel a need to. Also feel free to make comments on why you voted for a certain State in fixtures if anything is interesting or it was a tough call! We love to hear people's reasoning and opinions! Making comments on other peoples votes is not only allowed but very welcome if you have something to say. I would LOVE to see A LOT OF BICKERING, COMPETITIVENESS, and ARGUMENTS on Here!!!! Defend your Favorite States with PASSION!!!!

I believe I have said too much in this post, so I will stop here, and if you have any further questions, please feel free to ask me. I request that you ask here on the forums rather than sending me a PM, so everyone can see it.

I will have Round 1 Fixtures posted on here within the next 25 minutes.

I hope you are all excited and ready to vote. WHO IS EXCITED AND READY???

Here are Mine. Also if you are confused, here is a good example on how to vote.

Round 1:

Rhode Island vs Iowa - Neither state has anything super special to me; both are decent states, but I'll go with Rhode Island because it does have the coast, and Providence is a somewhat cool city!

Oregon vs Mississippi - Slightly more of an upscale state on average. Oregon has some cool stuff.

Alaska vs Alabama - Gotta go with Alaska here! So different from any other state.

Connecticut vs Idaho - Connecticut, Duh!!!!! Probably my number one favorite state! So much to say, but I'll save this for the later rounds. Idaho is a good state too, but can't take it over CT.

New Mexico vs Kentucky - Nice desert around New Mexico

Vermont vs Louisiana - Its close, but I do LOVE New Orleans Fried Chicken

South Carolina vs South Dakota - South Carolina by a lot!

New Hampshire vs Missouri - Close Call, but NH has better nature

Wisconsin vs West Virginia - I never had a chance to visit Wisconsin yet, but I've heard great things, and really do feel like this is a very nice state that I haven't visited yet.

Delaware vs Indiana - Oh My this is not easy. Delaware has some nice beaches, but Indianapolis is one of my favorite major cities of the country. Really love the food and architecture around Downtown Indianapolis; especially the Indiana Convention Center

Massachusetts vs Arkansas - Easy Pick

New Jersey vs Nebraska - Another Easy Pick

Ohio vs Wyoming - Wyoming has Yellowstone, but I honestly could never imagine living there. It's kind of a slightly desserted state.

Tennessee vs Oklahoma - Love the Smoky Mountains around Pigeon Forge, as well as Memphis

Maryland vs Nevada - Oh MY Word, this is SOOO TOUGH. Maryland has its good and bad parts. I do love the Eastern Shore of Maryland, especially Ocean City Boardwalk. Salisbury is nice. Southwestern Shore near Lexington Park is also interesting. That being said the city of Baltimore is very high crime, and not an appealing city by any means. Western Maryland might be nice for people that love mountains, but I personally wouldn't call myself a huge mountain fan. As for Nevada, I really have fell in love with the city of Las Vegas over the years!!! Love the food, entertainment, and nightlife. While Las Vegas is not my favorite city in the country; it is very unique, and I've never seen any other city like it. Therefore, I'm giving the slight edge to Nevada; likely the slight underdog here I guess.

Minnesota vs North Dakota - Twin Cities

Illinois vs Montana - Really do love Chicago

Georgia vs Kansas - I lived in Augusta, GA temporarily, and traveled a lot to Atlanta. And honestly, Georgia is one of my least favorite states that I've ever lived in. Augusta is a total dump. Atlanta is just a very crowded city with maybe tons of industries, but nothing super to tour. I feel like the city of Atlanta has adopted a history all about race, and there are so many areas around the city that if you are the wrong color, you could be targeted. Savannah is an ok city close to the ocean, but Georgia's coastline is not nearly as beautiful as many other states coastline's. Might even be one of the least appealing coastlines of all states. I've never had a chance to go to Kansas, but it's a state that has interested me before, and I feel like it is located in an area with unique geography.

Rhode Island vs Iowa: RI
I can't think of any reason I'd choose Iowa over Rhode Island. RI is coastal, beautiful, and Providence is a lovely city.

Oregon vs Mississippi: OR
Mississippi may be the worst state in the entire Union, I dont know that I'd choose it over anyone.

Alaska vs Alabama: AL
Alaska could be a nice visit one day but its just too far away from everywhere else. Alabama is at least decent.

Connecticut vs Idaho: CT
Connecticut is more diverse and closer to better places. Idaho is okay though and I'd pick it over some other places!

New Mexico vs Kentucky: KY
Nothing special about either state to me but again Kentucky is closer to better places and has Louisville.

Vermont vs Louisiana: LA
Never been to Louisiana. I have been to Vermont, and it's pretty but aside from that having no large city really hurts it here.

South Carolina vs South Dakota: SC
Not a huge SC fan but SD isnt appealing at all.

New Hampshire vs Missouri: MO
New Hampshire is cool but Mizzou at least has large cities.

Wisconsin vs West Virginia: WI
West Virginia is damn near Mississippi status to me. I choose Wisconsin easily.

Delaware vs Indiana: DE
Indiana is one of the more unattractive states I've been to. Easily Delaware.

Massachusetts vs Arkansas: MA
Arkansas isn't great and Mass has Boston.

New Jersey vs Nebraska: NJ
Never been to Nebraska and not a huge Jersey guy but it's closer to better places.

Ohio vs Wyoming: OH
I'm not sure I'd pick Wyoming over anywhere. It doesn't stand a chance over Ohio, which is pretty dope.

Tennessee vs Oklahoma: TN
I was quite unimpressed by Oklahoma. Tennessee on the other hand, was dope.

Maryland vs Nevada: NV
I'm unimpressed by Maryland. Nevada is dope.

Minnesota vs North Dakota: MN
Why choose North Dakota when Minnesota is right there?

Illinois vs Montana: IL
Never been to either state besides Midway Airport. Montana doesnt stand a chance here.

Georgia vs Kansas: GA
I am not a Georgia guy in the slightest. But Kansas? Was thoroughly unimpressed.

Rhode Island vs Iowa - Rhode Island. Lots of good memories with trips to Block Island, dinner on Federal Hill in Providence, and the charms of Newport. This tiny state packs in a lot to do.

Oregon vs Mississippi: Oregon. Though I don't care much for Portland anymore, the OR coast is magnificent and I'd love to see Crater Lake.

Alaska vs Alabama: Alaska. I've got family in Anchorage, so I'll always appreciate the superlatives that Alaska offers in the way of nature and beauty. No other state competes with its grand scale of mountains and wilderness offered.

Connecticut vs Idaho: Connecticut. CT has lots of New England charms and scenic shoreline towns like Stonington, Mystic, and Guilford. Gillette Castle State Park is really cool. Also New Haven pizza for the win!

New Mexico vs Kentucky: New Mexico. NM has some magic in its landscapes and its food. I miss hot green chile, which reminds me that it's now harvest season for Hatch Chile, I need to order some.

Vermont vs Louisiana: Vermont. Of course I'm going to pick my current home state. I did a lot of skiing here as a teenager. I like the pace of life here and the beautiful green mountains. It's rural but not too isolated with easy access to fun cities like Montreal and Quebec City just over the border.

South Carolina vs South Dakota: South Dakota. I enjoyed horseback riding, hiking, and touring a bison ranch in the Black Hills. SC rubs me the wrong way.

New Hampshire vs Missouri: New Hampshire. I enjoy Portsmouth and love some of the attractions in the White Mountains like the Flume and the scenic Kancamangus Highway. If the stars align, I may relocate to NH in 2025.

Wisconsin vs West Virginia: Wisconsin. I recently explored Milwaukee and Door County back in the spring. I'd love to go back, I really enjoyed Whitefish Dunes and the Lake Michigan shoreline.

Delaware vs Indiana: Delaware. I like Bethany Beach, the DE shoreline is pretty nice. Indiana is pretty forgettable.

Massachusetts vs Arkansas. Massachusetts. MA is where my roots are. I just came back from a weekend on Cape Cod, lots of swimming and seafood meals out. The local scallops are so good. Growing up on the North Shore, there was always a lot to do. Salem is my favorite city that I've ever lived in. I just don't know how Arkansas could be in the same conversation as Massachusetts.

New Jersey vs Nebraska: New Jersey. Cape May is one of my favorite beach towns on the East Coast, and overall I love spending time on the Jersey Shore. I also like the small towns along the Delaware River (Frenchtown, Lambertville). Surprisingly I really enjoyed my time in Omaha, but the rest of Nebraska leaves a lot to be desired.

Ohio vs Wyoming: Ohio. As much as I love the West, Wyoming is probably my least favorite state out there. Aside from the National Parks in the NW corner, the rest of the state is so barron, cold, and desolate. I'd like to explore the Over the Rhine neighborhood in Cincinnati.

Tennessee vs Oklahoma: Tennessee. I'd be interested in exploring the mountains of eastern Tennessee.

Maryland vs Nevada: Maryland. I was actually pretty impressed with Maryland. I took a summer vacation on the Eastern Shore last year. I loved the seafood, Old Bay crab cakes, camping with wild horses on the beach at Assateague Island, boating and sunsets on the Chesapeake Bay. Baltimore needs a lot of work, Annapolis is a beautiful little city with lots of character. But honestly for Nevada I can't think of anything redeeming about it. I really don't like Las Vegas at all. I would only go back again to see Cirque. I do like the desert, but the scenery in Nevada's neighboring states is so much better.

Minnesota vs North Dakota: Minnesota. I'll take 10,000 lakes over desolate prairies and oil fracking.

Illinois vs Montana: Illinois. As much as love Big Sky Country, it can't compete with Chicago for me. It's my favorite big city to visit in the US.

Georgia vs Kansas: Georgia. The historical charms of Savannah and beautiful Atlanta for the win.

Rhode Island vs Iowa - Iowa's size/volume overpowers RI and is the more culturally significant state between the two.

Oregon vs Mississippi - Oregon offers a much high quality of life and takes this one decisively

Alaska vs Alabama - Alaska's uniqueness and natural beauty edge this one

Connecticut vs Idaho - CT's coastline, wealth of significant small cities, and proximity to NYC edge this one

New Mexico vs Kentucky - I prefer NM's natural landscape and more diverse culture

Vermont vs Louisiana - VT offers a much higher quality of life

South Carolina vs South Dakota - SC wins easily on size/volume and coastal attractions alone.

New Hampshire vs Missouri - The St. Louis and KCMO metros carry MO easily here

Wisconsin vs West Virginia - Milwaukee, Madison, and the many other lakefront cities across the state give Wisconsin the edge

Delaware vs Indiana - IN wins on size/volume led by the Indianapolis metro

Massachusetts vs Arkansas - Boston and Cape Cod make this an easy win over a state that lacks urban prowess

New Jersey vs Nebraska - Proximity to NYC and an attractive coastline give NJ the win

Ohio vs Wyoming - Ohio's largest cities trump Wyoming's best natural offerings

Tennessee vs Oklahoma - TN offers more natural beauty and the Nashville/Memphis areas overpower Oklahoma's biggest metros.

Maryland vs Nevada - Maryland offers a lot of geographic diversity for a small state and is no economic slouch between the Baltimore metro and its DC suburbs.

Minnesota vs North Dakota - The Twin Cities alone edge this for MN

Illinois vs Montana - Chicagoland alone overpowers Montana's best natural offerings

Georgia vs Kansas - Atlanta alone wins this for GA

Rhode Island vs Iowa - Rhode Island has the coast, and some beautiful beaches and the New England vibe.

Oregon vs Mississippi - Oregon's coastline, mountains and overall cities beat Mississippi

Alaska vs Alabama - Gonna actually give the edge to Alabama with this matchup. Love Alaska's geography, but not the climate. Alabama has cities I like: Birmingham and Huntsville are highly livable.

Connecticut vs Idaho - Idaho has gorgeous scenery, but its cities leave a lot to be desired. The state can have tough winters and also is isolated from the coast. Connecticut has a gorgeous coastline, and many beautiful regions, with a high quality of life.

New Mexico vs Kentucky - New Mexico's Santa Fe beats anything in Kentucky, in my opinion. Love the beauty of the state of NM. Kentucky is ok in some areas: Louisville has some charm and unique areas, as do Owensboro and Lexington. But eastern Kentucky is a depressing area and run down.

Vermont vs Louisiana - Going with Louisiana due to New Orleans alone! What a gem of a city. Vermont is a beautiful state, but too remote for me.

South Carolina vs South Dakota - not even a contest. South Carolina's coast, Charleston, Greenville, Columbia, all are great cities with history, many things to do, and growing well. South Dakota has a few things interesting, but pales in comparison.

New Hampshire vs Missouri - Gotta go with Missouri due to St Louis, Kansas City and the Branson area. New Hampshire has some quaint towns, but feels too small and isolated.

Wisconsin vs West Virginia - West Virginia, geographically, is gorgeous in many areas. But Wisconsin has Madison and Milwaukee, plus the great lake coast. All huge areas with tons to see and do.

Delaware vs Indiana - Delaware cannot compete to Indianapolis in terms of cities. But Delaware's coast is prettier than a lot of Indiana, which is rolling or flat farmland in much of the state.

Massachusetts vs Arkansas - Cape Cod is one of the most gorgeous areas, in general. Boston area has anything you want to do practically. Arkansas's NW area is beautiful, and Hot Springs is so charming. But most of the state has little to offer and is impoverished.

New Jersey vs Nebraska - New Jersey is one of the most attraction-filled and amenity-filled quality of life states. Compared to Nebraska, which has a nice city in Omaha, and a smaller city in Lincoln, but the rest of Nebraska is farmland or rolling hills, with not much there but livestock.

Ohio vs Wyoming - Grand Teton and Yellowstone are my favorite 2 national parks. The geography in Wyoming is breath-taking. Ohio has a ton of great cities, but it's "vanilla" in a way.

Tennessee vs Oklahoma - Tennessee has a ton of variety in geography with beautiful mountains, waterfalls, canyons and caves, and rolling hills. Add in all the attractions, and booming Nashville, Knoxville, Chattanooga and Memphis, and Oklahoma can't compete. Oklahoma City and Tulsa have some great neighborhoods, but overall, it's not as exciting as Tennessee.

Maryland vs Nevada - Love the coastal Maryland region, so much to do. Nevada has some decent cities in Vegas and Reno, but the state is largely arid and a tough climate.

Minnesota vs North Dakota - Minneapolis/St Paul is a terrific region with tons to see and do. North Dakota has very little to offer, in general.

Illinois vs Montana - Chicago is the reason I like Illinois. Montana is a stunning state geographically, though.

Georgia vs Kansas - Love Georgia. The Atlanta region is one of the best in the US. Kansas has no answer for that, and cannot compete.
