I was older than 30 when DoorDash came around, though I didn't use it until 10 years later. It's a once-per-month or so thing in our home, which I think is how most people use the service. We get items we don't normally eat, like omelets and hash browns — a carton of eggs and potatoes would go bad here before they got used up. The restaurant we always order from seals everything with tape. Never had a problem. Reply With Quote Quick reply to this message

Like 90% of restaurants will have some health code violations. Not because of people spitting into food or something, just stuff like not keeping things at the right temperatures, facilities not being cleaned/maintained properly. Most of the time it's not gonna get people sick. "Most of the time". Reply With Quote Quick reply to this message

How do you know it’s “healthier?” Not everything you can order on there is junk. As a matter of fact, you can order virtually anything at all.

As for “lazy,” not that either. It can be convenient when out traveling for work, or even if just stuck at the office or on site all day.
In addition, not everyone drives. My son uses it. He is 15. He doesn’t order junk.

I guess that's why they are so successful... they are just providing the infrastructure for anyone to click on and use and they get the percentage.

So yeah I guess this irresponsible person just moves onto the next platform... wonderful.

I assume in passenger driving apps like Uber they run the license for driving record but probably not if they’re just bringing people food.

This is the reason the government had to step in during Covid to make an exception to allow them to collect unemployment, because they’re all 1099. But DoorDash never paid into Unemployment so taxpayers paid it. These people who do this full time, they have no unemployment, they can’t get state short term disability if they get hurt. When they turn 65, they will only get the minimum because they’ve not paid into Social Security. It’s a great business model for the companies, but it comes at the expense of drivers and taxpayers. Aside from them not being vetted like they would for a job.

I work in rehab in nursing homes, and we have a lot of elderly and disabled folks who aren’t elderly, who can’t drive anymore and depend on delivery service for groceries and food. Even the long term residents use it to order out once in a while. Reply With Quote Quick reply to this message

Yes, I agree. It’s the same in the nursing home. We may get seven violations after our state inspection, but the majority of them are things like not using the correct outlets or extension cords, or not having cleaning products locked up. It doesn’t mean the care of the residents is sub-par, but people might assume that unless they actually read the inspection report. Reply With Quote Quick reply to this message

My issue with them is the toll the fees take on small business. There’s a small pizza place near work who told me they can’t afford to be included in DoorDash because of the onerous fees, so they just lose out on business. They have their own driver at night but can’t afford it in the daytime. But the big chains can easily absorb these fees and costs. It’s the small businesses that get hurt.

The fees charged to the restaurant range from 15% of the order all the way up to 30% of the price of the order, the higher the commission percentage, the more visibility on the app they will have (they have 3 tiers of inclusion on the app). Applebees and McDonald’s can easily pay for the highest tier but very few individually owned restaurants can.

90%? Do you have a link to support this? My guess, no you don't. How many people have kitchens in their homes that would fail inspection? Cat walking across countertops? When was the last time the home chef washed their hands?

Local paper covers food inspections, frequently they will have a headline: 36 area restaurants get perfect health dept scores, 4 forced to close. You can actually look up any restaurant in Florida to review their food inspection reports.

For the sure to follow up question, no, it is EXTREMELY rare that I go out to eat at restaurants, fast food or expensive sit down restaurants. It started as dietary restrictions, but I quickly realized I don't NEED to go out for anything. Even while traveling, it's very simple to keep a mini fridge in the truck, and bring along a camping stove if I really feel the need for a hot meal. Maybe it doesn't work for others, but it's actually made my life a whole lot simpler, and cheaper.

If I stop at a gas station for a soda, I only buy bottles or cans with sealed twist off caps. I'm not touching the open stuff on the grill, or the exposed pizza slices. Even at the grocery store, I won't buy single cans, or the 6 packs of mini cans. Either bottles, or boxed up cans.

No, I don't live in terrified fear of the boogeyman. Yes, I realize this can happen anywhere, and sealed isn't a 100% ironclad guarantee of safety. Some clown can just as easily do this in a canning factory somewhere before things get boxed up and shipped out. But these are simple things for me to do to minimize exposure, and doesn't have a major effect on my life.

I also have never ordered door dash. My feeling: If Im too lazy to go get the food, then I can skip the meal!

I don't mind single cans, but I routinely wipe off the rim before I crack it open.

I eat in a restaurant at least once if not twice a day. I don't enjoy chain restaurants but will hit one if the area is low on competition or I'm in a rush.
