Over the years I started loving diners more and more. Growing long in a tooth I take it.
Old diners, diners with stories. Simple food, simple people, old school design, no one rushing you.

My first introduction to a diner was in Queens, Tower diner, 1997. It was beautiful inside and out because it was based inside an old bank. Sadly it was demolished not long ago so that more buildings can be put up.

That is one of the many reason I hate queens. At least Brooklyn has historic looking areas, plenty actually, but queens is just an immigrant parking lot full of streets and buildings, nothing else. Forest hills gardens excluded and some of Kew Gardens because I lived there, a block away from where Kitty Genovese was killed.

Train car diners are my favorite, but to be honest as long as it’s small and old looking I’m happy. Must have personality and have personalities in it.

I’m near Thomases Diner on LI, but my favorite diner is in Northport. https://nptshipwreck.com/

I did have some weird diner stops in recent memory. The types where you walk in with a whole family and wished you didn’t but since you are the only one there and kids are starving and there is nothing else around you somewhere near the border of Canada coming from Bangor ME, you stay and eat. Rural Vermont, NY and NH has plenty of cool diners,.
I did have an amazing breakfast in some mountain town of California next to train tracks sometimes in 2013. Lobster meat omelette with avocados on top, it was amazing.

Post you favorite diners. With links if doable. I’ve planned road trips around old eateries in mind.

Oh and here is a cool old documentary about diners of PA. Grab some tea and cookies and enjoy.

When I was a kid I have fond memories of eating at the Chelsea Square diner.

A whole post about diners, and not one mention of the "Diner Capital of the World" right next door. New Jersey has more diners than any other state.

But since you like diner history, you must know Silk City Diners. I ate at one in upstate New York, just before you cross the border into MA on your way to Great Barrington/Stockbridge.

One can still order from the Tower Diner takeout menu (the Tower at Diner Bar menu) as the owner of the nearby location DinerBar is the brother of the former Tower Diner owner.
https://thedinerbar.com/wp-content/u...tyle-09-24.pdf

Georgia Diner is still around on Queens Blvd. (although it did move some years ago to the former Nevada Diner location as its original building was demolished for a newer building).

I remember Georgia diner very well. It was one of the first diners we went to when we started driving. I remember they had a smoking room and Long Island iced teas were served without checking IDs. Nevada diner was a lot cooler. The mid 70s design was out of a movie. I was there a few years ago.

Tower diner was special because it was my first diner. Also it had an amazing interior, very high ceiling and a dome that would light up blue. Through out the years some of the writers remained for 20 plus years. It felt expensive without being expensive.

I like Thomas's. Great breakfast. I like the Broadway Diner on 106/107. Best french toast I every had. However, I really have no reason to go to LI any more (and less with congestion pricing since I can't avoid a toll to get there.)

It's bad. It's not that bad. I can get an omelet with coffee and OJ included for $15 on the UES. But it's harder than it used to be.

And hopefully they don’t accidentally charge you $39 out of nowhere then you have to call your bank about the fraudulent charges.

Yes, Tower Diner did have a cool interior. But I actually remember walking past it as a teenager with my grandmother when it was still a bank.

Another still active diner in Queens is Austin House Diner in Forest Hills.
