King Kullen, a grocery store chain founded in 1930 in Queens by the Cullen family, has apparently agreed to sell all its remaining 32 stores (and 5 Wild by Nature stores) to Stop and Shop. Takeover is expected some time during the first quarter of this year.

Sad but there is just no way a small company like king Kullen could compete anymore.

Compete against who? The following already went out of business over the years:
-PathMark
-A&P
-Waldbaums
-Grand Union
-Food Town

The ONLY MAJOR supermarkets left are Shopwrite and Stop & Shop. MONOPOLY!
Sure, there are the smaller ones like Meat Farms, Best Yet, and a few other SMALL markets.

This is VERY interesting, because there is a Wild by Nature store on Union Blvd in West Islip that is practically cheek by jowl close to the Stop & Shop in the next parking lot. The Wild by Nature was originally the West Islip King Kullen, and when that store closed they divided the space (a stand alone building) into 2/3 Wild by Nature and 1/3 a Dollar Tree.

I wonder if Stop & Shop is thinking about trying a standalone store for their Nature's Promise line (like King Kullen did with Wild by Nature)?

I can't think what else S&S will do with the existing Wild by Nature space in West Islip. It would be counterproductive for them to keep it as Wild by Nature because that would compete with all the Nature's Promise organic stuff being sold in the Stop & Shop a few hundred yards away.

That said, I always found WbyN to be much in second place to Whole Foods. At least WF carries non-organic items as well. WbyN was also more expensive, as a rule, for any items they carried that WF did as well -- and that was well before the Amazon acquisition. So while WbyN had better prices than Sherry's, they were more expensive than WF.

Elke, thanks for the link to the timeline; I had no idea that there was ever any connection between KK and Donald Trump, LOL!

I remember Gristedes's in West Islip during the 1970s, they had excellent quality meat and they even had house accounts where you could sign for your purchases and they'd send you a bill at the end of every month. Old school. :-)

I find the remaining small markets like North Shore Farms, Fresh Market, Uncle Guiseppes, etc to have the deadly combination of the highest prices and the smallest selection. Fairway is a decent size store but they closed the one near Smith Haven Mall and so AFAIK the only one left is the one in Plainview. Best Market used to carry the brand of honey I buy (Langnese) but stopped recently -- probably due to the impending acquisition -- and so Fairway is the only other local brick and mortar that now sells it. It's no cheaper on Amazon and there's the breakage risk (glass jars) to consider via that method but if Fairway bites the dust too someday, I'll have no other choice. I'm in Suffolk so I only go to Fairway to replenish my stock of honey; I wouldn't otherwise.

King Kullen does have a good bakery dept though. Their packaged breads like Ecce Panis are received par-baked/frozen and only "finished" thee, but their cakes and cookies are made in-house. I used to buy their Apple Cake all the time before the store near me closed. I should make a trip to one of the surviving stores and buy one next week just for old times' sake, LOL

I use to work on a route when I graduated H.S. (Many moons ago, lol) delivering to All of the Major Markets I listed above. Along with the smaller ones. Now with just TWO major food chains left, sad those routes are worthless. Way too much consolidation now.

Best Yet/Best Market has been sold to Lidl (pronounced like "needle"), a German company which already has stores along the Eastern coast (from VA to PA/NJ) and in other countries. (see history and flyer: https://www.lidl.com/about-us https://www.lidl.com/flyer ).
