Last election 7 counties spoke for the remaining 14.

Shedding 'tears' leaves two categories, the Magnificent 7 vs silenced majority.

Judging criteria so vast and subjective, the ranking is useless if criteria used is not referenced. Number of tiers will also vary. Most counties have split personalities.

Interesting question to see what issues are important to each poster. Then again the election results by county pretty much tell it all.

This is the question. It's in the eye of the beholder. Reply With Quote Quick reply to this message

It’s meaningless without a metric. It’s just a list. Reply With Quote Quick reply to this message

Making everything on this board political is soooooo exhausting, sigh.... Counties don't speak for themselves, people do. The majority of people, concentrated in several counties near major population centers, will always have more voting impact than sparsely populated areas. As they should. The end.

To the actual question, of the ones that I've been to enough times to have an opinion (see, I can like red counties and blue counties at the same time!):

1. Morris - nice, well kept towns still within a (long-'ish) commuting distance to the city
2. Bergen - lots of nice areas, but Route 17 & Paramus keep this from the #1 spot for me
3. Ocean - LBI
4. Cape May - Cape May
5. Essex - highs & lows here... Montclair, Maplewood, etc. have great downtowns and some of the best pre-war housing stock on the east coast; urban areas are in sad shape
6. Monmouth - nice shore towns, outside of Asbury & Red Bank a bit stuffy
7. Hudson - my home county, and I love Hoboken/JC for their nice downtowns & access to city; other areas are less nice, traffic is horrendous (as you would expect) and outside of Hob/JC transit is sub-par for an urban area
8. Union - similar to Essex, highs & lows... Summit & Westfield are two of my favorite suburbs in the state, but there are some seedier areas as well
9. Atlantic - like Longport, dislike AC & Brigantine

Somewhat familiar, but not quite enough to rank:
a. Middlesex - sprawly suburbia that's not particularly close to NYC or Philadelphia, but I imagine is popular with the pharma crowd
b. Hunterdon - not particularly close to major job centers, somewhat nicer woodsy suburbia
c. Sussex - beautiful in parts, but I get strange vibes in the towns themselves

Sorry Philly burb counties, I barely know ye.

1. Monmouth: wish I lived there when I lived in NJ. Great towns, at the beach, relatively refined. Overall a solid 10/10.
1b. Mercer: Outside Trenton I see no fault with this place.
2. Morris: Pristine towns, and lots of nice spots to see. Good food and Morristown. Expensive and local traffic keep it from #1 for me.
3. Essex: Really high highs and really low lows.
4. Camden: High highs and low lows. But Collingswood and Haddonfield are just awesome.
5. Hudson: Great urbanity and Hoboken is always a W.
6. Somerset: a bit far out, it has some nice spots.
7. Ocean: LBI is mid but the county overall is pretty nice.
8. Cape May: Outside Wildwoods and Cape May there isnt much, but still a cool county.
9. Bergen: Pretty run down for what it is. My biggest let down in NJ. Inconvenient, trafficy etc. Did not enjoy living here.
10. Middlesex: Suburban sprawl, strip malls and chaos.
11. Sussex: Oh boy….

Of what im super familiar with

Ill add context to my completely subjective opinions.

Tier I
Morris – well kept, upper middle class, good areas with no real bad parts (9th wealthiest county in the country), Morristown is a beautiful small city/town, and all the beautiful lake towns/neighborhoods. Its commutable to the city, close to the Poconos, New York State.
Sussex – a lot of natural beauty in the area, the people are nice, some beautiful towns, communities, hiking, skiing, lakes. It is the most beautiful part of the state.
Somerset – Some of the most beautiful towns in the state along 287. There are a few average places, but the good overdoes everything.
Ocean – LBI, enough said.

Tier II
Monmouth – it has some really beautiful towns, the beaches, nature. Some things bring it down such as the beaches aren’t as nice as Ocean counties, and some bad towns/areas, along with working class areas.
Hunterdon – It’s the wealthiest county in NJ, there’s not a whole lot going on but the towns have beauty and are quiet.
Warren – Theres not a whole lot going on here, but there is a ton of hiking and beauty.
Cape May – Cape May is beautiful but its far from everything and a deserted area 8 months of the year.

Tier III
Bergen – there’s a lot of nice towns, however, there’s also a ton of traffic, congestion and people are on top of each other.
Essex – There are a lot of desirable towns on the western part of the county, but as you move closer to Newark the worse it gets.
Burlington – deserves a middle spot. About 1/3 of the towns in Burlington County are some of the most desirable towns in the entire state, however, about 2/3rds are mediocre to less desirable places to be.
Camden – a lot of mediocrity happening in Camden County. Cherry Hill and Camden cancel each other out. It’s convenient for shopping and access to Philly.
Passaic – Some beautiful and desirable towns up north, then you have Paterson and congested areas around Clifton.

Tier IV
Mercer – convenience between Philadelphia and New York. You have Trenton and overrated town names but not an area you want to strive to live in but rather settle in.
Gloucester – not a whole lot going on here. There are some good-average towns here but nothing really stands out.
Hudson – Sure there are beautiful views of NYC, and some great small cities, but there is also a lot of poverty and bad areas that go with it all.
Atlantic – a lot of poverty, ghetto in the woods, the only saving grace is that it has beach front towns.

Tier V

Cumberland – Theres nothing happening here.
Salem – Theres nothing happening here.
Middlesex – the pit stains of NJ. Too much grit, working class, immigrants. Theres not much to desire here except overpriced post-war housing that costs an arm and a leg.
Union – too much diversity happening here. First it has a strange feeling from being a geological and ecological transition zone. You have industrial, manufacturing, an international airport, some very bad towns and a ton of grit . Sure Westfield is nice, and Summit is on the very outskirt of the county but lets be real people are living there for work reasons and parkway access because it’s the nice part in a bad zone. Union County is the Armpit of America.

Why go to the trouble of creating a list like this? Why not just say you love rich people and hate poor people, especially those diverse ones? I'm sure the poor people in Union County thank God every day they can count Westfield as a neighboring town. Reply With Quote Quick reply to this message

Why bother posting on the internet at all? It's just a conversation. OK? Reply With Quote Quick reply to this message
