It had a fire about a year and a half ago; I don't think it reopened.

Warwick Shopper's World
Steak n' Shake (E. Greenwich)
OLP Seminary (Warwick Neck) - next to the dearly departed Rocky Point
Bay View Restaurant (Oakland Beach - Warwick - great clam cakes!)
There were a whole bunch of really good shoe and clothing stores in Arctic (West Warwick), now all gone

As an aside, some of those places in the original post are classics! Was the Ming Garden the Chinese restaurant downtown or the one on Smith Street near Chalkstone?

Ming Garden was downtown from Westminster Street to Exchange Place. You are thinking of Mandarin Garden at Smith and Chalkstone. It is still there. BTW, it was the Chicken Coop before it became a Chineese restaurant.

Mandarin Garden was originally an auto repair shop. My parents always called it Mandarin Garage.

The Mee Hong Chinese Rest. abutted the Turks Head Bldg. on Westminster. I worked for a law firm on the TH bldg. and my office window was on that side. When I was a few mos. pregnant, the odor of Chinese food at lunchtime wafted up thru our windows, and made me sick. LOL! There probably was no a/c in the Turks Head Bldg., that was 1968. Pigeons used to perch on our windows sills too which was 'gross'.

The Ming Garden was diagonally across the street -- on the north side of Westminster. The second floor (Luau Hut) was frequented by many 'guys' from 'the Hill'.

There was also Luke's Chinese in Prov.

While we're at it, there were also (at the time) the best department stores, etc. downtown Prov.

Shepard's
Peerless
Gladdings
The Outlet Co.
Jean's Dress Shoppe
Casual Corner
Tilden-Thurber
McGarry's Restaurant
Heller & Michaelson's Fabric & Yarn Store
Sears Roebuck, on No. Main St.

I remember Mee Hong and nearby was Waldorf Cafeteria. Wasn't Luke's Chinese also called Luke's Polynesian? If this is the one behind the city hall? There was also a chinese restaurant on Washington Street on the second floor. They had chow mein sandwiches for 25 cents at the time. Pigeons and starlings were the only permanent residents of downtown Providence at the time. So mant store's downtown. City Hall Hardware, The Boston Store, Morse's Shoes, W.t Grant, Kresge, J.J. Newberry, Winklers' Steakhouse, Anderson Little(downtown and on North Main Street, T. W Rounds (downtown and Elmgrove Ave), Weybosset Pure Food and so many more.

Look at the link I posted, there is a pic of Luke's on there when you open it ... and a bit of description.

Oh gosh, Winklers' Steakhouse, yes! Our attorneys were fixtures in there. Good job on the others, I forgot about Grant's, Newberry's and Kresge's, et als. Loved T.W. Rounds, I always spent too much $$ in there on handbags, and too much at Peerless on shoes. Peerless and Shartenburgs in Pawtucket were nice too ... all gone.

I just learned something new today! New York Lace Store, Coats Field, and Warwick Shoppers World were all the same company.

Did the RI New York Lace Stores stay open after the 1970 Zayre acquisition of Coats Field and Warwick Shoppers World?

^^^ Do you mean the Coats' Field on Lonsdale Ave., in the old mill bldg. ? I worked there in the men's dept. after school 1960 for one season. I'm pretty sure it closed a few years after that. Wow ... going back a few years. I vividly remember the food counter on the right as you walked into the main entrance -- the whole store smelled like popcorn and hot dogs.

I seem to remember that NY Lace was downtown Pawtucket; also, there was McDevitt's men's store and we used to shop there for my Dad only at Christmas, it was a very nice store but a bit pricey. Also, Roberts' children's store was a few doors down, can't remember the name of that street. "Union" ???''

Does anyone remember the small restaurant w/counter and booths, across from Shartenberg's on Main St.? We used to go there after school for snacks, soda, french fries w/gravy, and play the juke box.

[quote=QuilterChick;45076366] I worked for a law firm on the TH bldg.

My late father worked for an insurance company originally located in the Turk's Head Building that grew to become FM Global and relocated to Johnston. Following his death when my sister and I were cleaning out his home we found two monogramed cup and saucer sets from the Turk's Head Club which we both still have. Don't think they are of much value, but to us they bring back many memories of taking the bus with our mother to Providence to meet our father after work during the Christmas season to see Santa and all the store decorations.
