That's not true at all. I was in Bar Harbor last year right before the tourist season ended and things sort of shut down for the winter. Many town workers were documented Jamaicans and Haitians that are here on temporary work visas and go back home in the winter.If every undocumented immigrant were to self-deport tomorrow, there would be a lot of economic fallout and pain from it as plenty of major sectors like construction, agriculture, food service, and childcare would have big issues in staffing. Americans would eventually backfill some of that but not all of it - a lot of those jobs are labor intensive meaning they need young people. A 55 year old American woman looking for a career change isn't going to put on roofs it pick fruit. There are less and less young native born Americans each year and most of them are but aspiring to do the jobs undocumented folks normally do. |

| | All the jobs I apply for apparently (in Los Angeles). They all require "Spanish speaker preferred" and "bilingual preferred"; I do speak Spanish, all my references are Spanish speakers, but I don't have Spanish name so it doesn't matter. When I change my name into a Spanish one I get ALOT more engagement. I get calls for jobs my resume doesn't even qualify me for. Then they hear my voice or see me in person and become disinterested and the interview becomes just a formality. It is funny and.. demoralizing. "Bilingual preferred" really means "Hispanics mostly, if not only". I'm trying not to get a negative attitude towards Hispanics, but I need to make money so I can live... (edit: though to be fair, I am being picky, there are certain jobs I like doing that mostly Hispanics do, so this is kinda my fault in that way) I have no problem learning any language to get work but what language I speak seems largely irrelevant. They even ask if I can speak Spanish on jobs where I only work by myself and answer to an English speaking manager. Luckily I DO have a job but not enough $$ to do anything other than eat and pay rent. |

| | Necessity is the mother of invention. That's why most harvesting is done with machines. Sure there a lot of manual labor done by Manuel, but that's gonna change. When illegals are sent home and aren't allowed back, then the wages will rise. My premise is the only way to overcome the inevitability of inflation, is for wages to exceed the inflation rate. It happened under Trump's first administration. No tax on tips and OT will be a BOOM in wages for the average working American earner. Less low paid workers means more opportunity to get more work and higher pay. |

Manual isn't picking crops he is working construction and other blue-collared jobs that use to pay a fair wage to Americans. |

Well that is 'increasingly true', but I live in an AG area. The ornamental (plants) side of thing is very labor intensive. I can't say who is or who isn't here illegally, because no one asks. Day pay is still how things are done. They get paid cash or with a check they cash at the grocery store for a transaction fee. Many more women work in the ornamentals then men. No heavy lifting. In addition, many of the former field workers are now running and fixing the equipment. Why do they stay in AG? because most of the immigration authorities do not venture into AG areas/farm land, but do venture in construction sites on a regular basis.When I go into my favorite Guatemex establishment for food, they know me, but if a stranger comes in... they get the nervous side eye these days. Lupe' has been around for 30 years and is a citizen, but I can't vouch for his employees. |

| | If I see Mexicans or South Americans working on a roof at 6:00am they will still be on the roof at 12 noon eating lunch. Sometime after 5pm they are gone, the roof is finished and the property all cleaned up. American workers don't do that. Even for the same money people would rather have laborers who are fast. I believe their work is superior because they work and live together in the same group. The Mexicans who live near me are living four, five or more adults plus a couple of children in two bedroom one bath houses. I rarely see them at fast food joints or restaurants even though they are a considerable percent of the population. They beat us at our own game. They live the same way today that my father and grandfather lived when they migrated out of the south after WWII. |
