Oh I was in Bucharest and wish I could get my money back! Even Athens wasn't as bad as at least it has nice nature surrounding it - mountains/hills in the North and good beaches in the South. Bucharest is in a boring flat land, really an ex swamp. Next time I'll probably visit Ljubljana, Zagreb, Belgrade or even Tirana, Skopje and Sarajevo instead. I bet the locals there would be more welcoming for one thing and all of them seem to have better nature surrounding the cities.

Bucharest just doesn't stand out much, except for some faux grand Paris architecture. It lacks interesting nature. Has lots of parks and some lakes but they're meh, not very beautiful. It's flat as pancake.

It has been toutted by some travel influencers and bloggers as the next big thing, almost like the next quirky, slightly drab ex commie but fun city (think Belin of the East). I can say it's drab and oppressive. You better go to Transilvanian and Western Romanian cities if you want to see any natural or architectural beauty. Bucharest is too drab and commie even if you enjoy some of that and I do (I like Petrzalka in Bratislava and Levski G district in Sofia for their wide open areas). For that there are better choices like Bratislava and indded Sofia. Bratislava at least has a better-maintained old town, albeit tiny and some hills near its center. Sofia's right next to a mountain and has a huge park very close to its center and both have better-looking Socialist architecture.

If anything for me Berlin of the East title must go to Bratislava, Belgrade or Sofia. Maybe the first two moreso as they have big rivers like Berlin has, Sofia rivers are tiny tiny.

Really have to check out Budapest, I loved visiting Balaton and the city looks even more beautiful than Vienna in photos to me.

I guess I need something more than old buildings. I need good food and an exotic culture. Food in most of Europe is meh or bland (not counting the Indonesian/Indian food in the Netherlands and the UK). While the Acropolis always looks amazing from the city bellow when I went up to it it lost its allure pretty fast. I realised "it's just rocks" that matter more to locals than they'll ever matter to me, even though the ancient Greek culture was influential.

I saw London, Paris and Athens, lived in Prague, visisited many places in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, so basically probably only Rome and Barcelona might interest me of big cities in Europe. Maybe also Porto and Lisbon, Funchal as they seem almost exotic compared to the rest. and Budapest as the last Central European capital I haven't been to.

I couldn’t disagree more. I have seen a number of European museums (art and history ones) and churches/cathedrals and I always enjoy experiencing them. Seeing Chartres Cathedral, Notre Dame, St. Peter’s, Westminster Abbey, St. Paul’s, the Duomos of Milan and Florence, the cathedrals of Toledo and Segovia, and St. Stephen’s in Vienna, as well as London’s National Gallery, The British Museum, The Victoria and Albert Museum, The Louvre, Musee d’Orsay, The Prado, The Uffizi, The Vatican Museum, Vienna’s Kunsthistorisches Museum, the Van Gogh Museum, and the Rijksmuseum (as well as the myriad historic houses, palaces, ruins, and monuments in Europe) constitute some of my most cherished and memorable travel experiences. They’re all sufficiently different from each other as well — I firmly maintain that they do not “all look the same.” I might add that experiencing art, sculpture, architecture, ceramics, glassware, and artifacts live and in person makes a huge difference as opposed to seeing pictures in books.

I disagree about European cuisine also. I’ve had terrifically good food experiences in France, Italy, Spain, Austria, the Czech Republic, even the UK, Ireland, and Netherlands, all involving typical fare from either that country or its allied imported cultures (Indian food in London, Indonesian food in Amsterdam). Europe doesn’t corner the market on great food experiences of course, but this observation sells European cuisine way short.

My only regret at this point is not experiencing all the European cities I want (including their food, museums, historic houses/cathedrals/palaces, parks, ruins, and monuments). I hope to rectify that someday, but even if I don’t, I’m most grateful for those I have been to.

Can't speak to Barcelona, never been & if I do it will be off season because of the extreme over-tourism there. That might be confined to certain touristy "ghettos" though, I don't know. I do know that when Euros visit NYC they all seem to have the same check list of the same sights to see. I understand the big, obvious "must see" places in popular destinations, but there seems to be the same secondary & nonsensical tertiary places that come up again & again that only tourists go to. This is especially true when it comes to food/restaurants. I suspect there are TikTok or Youtube videos that they are all watching but from other clueless tourists &, like lemmings, they follow a "tourists only" path to long lines & crowds of out-of-towners.

I will never tire of Rome, but these days it is off-season only & staying in a locals' neighborhood, not next to the Forum, etc... Anyone who doesn't love Rome cannot be my friend.

Porto, Lisbon & Funchal are all definitely worth visiting but I would definitely do off-season, especially now for Lisbon. Being there in April a couple of years ago it was much more full of tourist gaggles than a few years earlier even in summer. Some previously funky-in-a-good-way neighborhoods, I'm talking Alfama, are now mostly theme parks, like Venice. It's discovered, and the docking of cruise ships disgorging thousands of day trippers also has changed the vibe downtown.

Porto is getting there but not so much yet. Both have very reasonably priced cuisine/wine, largely oriented on seafood & mostly good, basic stuff. The haute cuisine is catching on quick & great value. Funchal is one of the nicest places I have ever visited, went for Carneval in February, lovely. Great seafood/wine & spectacular landscapes on the rest of the island.

My favorite place in the world is aqueduct park in Rome. After seeming the Colosseo, the Pantheon, Trevi, etc, it is so nice to be able to take a 20 minute ride out to see one of the greatest constructions of Ancient Rome, its totally free, not a tourist in sight, and dead quiet.

But here I am derailing my own thead!

Great point about TV or youtube videos.

It used to be long ago, you saw some pictures in National Geographic or in a Michelen travel book. When you went to an attraction, it was amazing to get the full impact of it. There is so much coverage of attractions now, all too often it is anti-climactic when you finally see the real thing. You are so familiar, it is not quite as spectacular as the old days when you mostly had no clue what you were in for.

It is too easy today to pretty much dissect an attraction today, before you ever visit in real life. There is still nothing like being there and having the 3D experience, sights, smells, textures -- but you can really be overstimulated after 20 youtube videos about a particular attraction and you lose your own "discovery".

Agree.

A couple of my motor coach companies has shutterbug tour guides who post literally every. single. thing. they see, including the meals. I mean photo dumps of 30-50 pics several times a day. Why bother paying for the trip when you can just log onto FB and enjoy the whole experience for free from the comfort of your recliner? You'd think they'd figure that out, but these people seem to think it's great publicity and also seem to be addicted to their phones. Comments say, "It makes me want to go!" but it makes me say "I've already been, thanks to you!"

Additionally, I don't appreciate having to dodge or hide from them when I'm among the guests and don't want my picture taken every five minutes to be plastered on a public forum. Annoying!

We used to watch a ton of Youtube Travel Vlogs.. Until this last trip to Europe. The one previously, everywhere we went seemed too familiar, if that makes sense. Reply With Quote Quick reply to this message

I think I'm done with 100% DIY self-roganized trips to places I've never been to yet. Even in Europe I'd like to mix my self-organized trip with the convenience of hotels and transfers offered by a travel agency. I guess I'm prone to travel anxiety when things do not go accoring to plan and they often don't if you always rely on public transport for transfers.

Also, in my country an organized trip often costs less as our state airline probably gives them better ticket fares or something. It depends on the tour guide of course, many suck. But many great ones could sell to you even an underhwelming, ugly city like Bucharest. I pay to be entertained, not to just be in a place. I get bored when I travel solo and basically buy supermarket food to ear at my hotel room as I'd rather do that than eat alone at the hotel restaurant.

I think a mix between a guided trip + some free days for you to explore is best. Thank God travel companies in my country often have some days with optional side trips you don't have to participate in. So basically you can use them just for hotels and transfers and do exploring on your own, which already takes off the stress of finding a hotel in a place you've never been or figuring out the train/bus schedule. For ciries I've lived in I'll probably do it 100% on my own but I still haven't seen the Devin castle or Danubiana even though I lived in Bratislava for a year so sometimes even in those places joining a group would be nice. Just my 2 c.

Before the days of the internet even Indiana sounded exotic. I remember going to the library to see pictures in books of places,. You had to use your imagination, now I watch these YouTube walking tours and it takes away the luster of travel in a way.

That’s how my wife and I spent our honeymoon trip to San Antonio. We took a guided tour one day and explored on our own the next day. Reply With Quote Quick reply to this message
